This month's featured athlete and winner of a new Medal Display is Mother of three, Ultra-Runner Gina Penman!!
Gina's running journey started when she joined the Army at 18 years old. Running was part of the job and it was a part that she hated!
Gina went on to have 3 children, the last two being twins. Like a lot of runners, she first started putting the miles in as a way to shift some weight. During the process of losing two and a half stone(!), she found that she was actually enjoying it and began to train for a half-marathon.
Having rekindled a passion for fitness, Gina also began hitting the gym and cycling to work. One day however, on a particularly rainy ride to work, she came off her bike and broke her arm.
Unable to train at the gym or ride her bike any more, Gina began to run every day. Initially this solved the problem and quenched her thirst for exercise but gradually she began to notice that she was losing the feeling in her legs.
Gina visited a doctor, who thought it might be cancer so was she was seen straight away. Fortunately, it wasn't cancer but it still wasn't good news. The diagnosis was a cyst in the spine, two prolapsed discs and she was told to never run again. Gina says "As you can imagine, I was gutted!"
After not running for six months, Gina started to experience other symptoms so she was sent back to the specialist. Eventually she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Speaking about the diagnosis now, Gina says "not good but it meant that the cyst didn't cause the numbness so I could start running again."
Fast forward to the present day and Gina has since completed five Ultra-Marathons and she is currently training for her longest race yet, a 100k Ultra!
Gina finished by saying something truly powerful, "I may have MS but it doesn't have me."
We want to thank Gina for sharing her story and inspiring others with her powerful mindset and super-strong human spirit. You can follow Gina's epic progress on her instagram.
