This month we give thanks to super mum, Liz McCollin, not only for sharing her son, Joshua’s story but also for all the hard work put in to making amazing athletes who they are today.
Without further ado we give the floor to Liz.
“Joshua has been swimming for Kingston Upon Hull Swimming Club the last 4 years. He trains 6 times a week and he is in the pool at 5am before school at least once, sometimes twice a week, and 6am on a Saturday morning.
He has competed in many competitions during this season alone and continues to go from strength to strength. He started the season by competing in his first 1500m freestyle race in November. He did it in a record time of 21.10.50 and broke the club record!
In December he competed at Leeds against one of the biggest clubs and achieved 2 silver, 1 bronze and 3 fourth place finishes.
In March he competed in the Yorkshire Championships qualifying for 10 races taking 4 top ten places in the 200 back, 100 fly, 100 free and 400IM. He also took silver in the 100 back and bronze in the 1500m free. He was chosen to be a member of the relay team who also secured top ten places.
In April he competed in the Hull Easter open and won 6 golds, in the 400 freestyle, 50 fly, 200IM ,50 backstroke, 100 fly and 100 backstroke along with a silver in the 50 breaststroke and bronze in the 50 freestyle. He was also very proud of winning a speeding award for his 200 back in a time of 2.35 – this was an 8 second PB and a 14year old NER Qualifying time.
In May he went to the Richmondale’s Gala and competed in 8 races of which he won 6 gold’s, 2 silvers and just missed out on the top boy trophy by 1 point but managed to help the club win the overall best club trophy.
In May also he qualified to compete in 12 races at the North East Region Championships and came 6th in the 1500m Freestyle. He also finished in top 10 and top 20 positions under tough conditions throughout all his other races.
He competes in Club gala competitions all year round and he has won numerous gold and silver medals – sometimes a bronze!
Joshua is very proud of his medal wall and he was desperate for a way of showing off his Finalist Pennants – thank you to Medal Displays we found the perfect solution!!
We are extremely proud of Joshua for the hard work and commitment he puts into his sport. He also finds the time to play rugby for Hull Ionians."
