We are thrilled to feature this month’s winner of Medals of the Month UK, Carla Howes.
She shares how her love for running came about from her brother’s compelling enthusiasm for the sport and has turned her into one of the most determined runners we know.
Over to you Carla.
“Running was never an interest of mine, even at school sports days I would avoid it, and opt for the obstacle races instead.
But after going to support my big brother at a half marathon once and seeing the different abilities, ages, sizes etc. that were taking part, I was inspired as I came to realize I didn't need to be fast.
My focus until now is just to finish. The last couple of years I had noticed my pace was picking up which is a bonus and the personal best's were coming at me. This shocked me a lot!
Since the first race I ever did back in 2010, I have now done a few half marathons, with the Great North being my favorite. I have also taken part in Endure24 both as a team, and went solo the following year to up my game a little bit more.
I even took part in our local charity fun run organized by the Didcot Runners team with my youngest nephew the last couple of years. I joined to help me progress, and meet like-minded people, and most important of all, it made me feel good too.
That was until injury got me this year, not even through running. Not being a quitter, and being the determined person that I am, I ran through it on more than one occasion that is.
Until now, I finished the 'Great South Run' this year in style. It was the last race of the year so I thought I'd give it my all, and that I did! I am currently still on crutches and leg brace with painkillers, waiting on a scan, but at least I got a PB (Personal Best)! Lol
I Need to recover quickly though as I won a London Marathon place for next year through my local running club.”
